🧚🏼 #fairytalefridays 🧚🏼 Today I’m playing a duet from Acante et Céphise (1751), an opera by Rameau, with @karalamoure. Kara is playing the bassoon part, and I’m playing the musette part on bassoon. Thanks so much for playing this with me, Kara! 💍 This opera is an example of opéra féerie (fairy opera), one of several that Rameau composed. Although not based on a specific fairy tale, the story involves plot and character archetypes common in fairy tales. In this opera, Acante and Céphise are lovers who receive a special ring from a good fairy named Zirphile. The ring allows them to communicate their emotions telepathically when they aren’t around one another. Zirphile has given them the ring to defend themselves against an evil genie who wants to take Céphise as his bride. After a series of dramatic twists and turns, Acante and Céphise triumph over the genie. 💍 This duet comes from a dance in Act II called a musette. A musette is both a type of dance and the name of an instrument. The genre is recognizable by its moderate tempo and drone, which comes from the nature of the bagpipe-like instrument.
