This has been another very busy week in my life as a PhD x Science Writer 😮‍💨 Alongside the lab and the blog writing this week though we had some very special guests visiting from @in2scienceuk ✨ @in2scienceuk is a charity organisation that promotes social mobility and diversity in STEM! Unlike alot of similar programs or internship opportunities, @in2scienceuk actually offer their students a bursary to cover any travel and lunch costs while on placement 😯 👏🏻 We hosted three eager A-level students and they got to experience everything from the imaging centre and brain bank, to bacteria and fruit flies 🪰! We let them try their hand at dissecting the larvae and adult fruit fly brains 🧠, climbing assays, epilepsy assays, and selecting flies for genetic crosses 🧬 And then we had an informal careers chat with them and talked all things UNI ✨ It was really good fun (huuuuge shoutout to my amazing colleagues for their part) and honestly if this part of the PhD could be my entire job I’d be happy 😂 Wishing the best of luck to those students and to anyone else who received their #AlevelResults and is off to university. I will share with you what I said to the students “10 years from now, which is where I am sat, noone will ask you what grades you achieved in your A-levels. They are merely a gateway to the next step in your career - enjoy it, it goes fast” ❤️ • Its a bank holiday weekend here in the UK 🇬🇧 so I hope you all have some rest time penciled in! I need to pop to the labs tomorrow AM to split my cells for an experiment next week (lab on a weekend?? A real rarity for me) but after that I am off to Brighton ☀️ for some family time and fresh air 🍃
