🍾 There may be no other sound synonymous with a celebration as the pop of a cork! 🍾 ‌ Have you ever wondered how cork gets from the tree to your bottle? I had the opportunity to visit @amorimcorkamerica a couple of weeks ago to learn this and more. Here are some of the fun facts I took away from the day ⬇️ ‌ ▹ The Quercus Suber, or Cork Oak tree, lives approximately 200 years. ▹ It’s the only tree to regenerate its bark. ▹The first harvest doesn’t occur until the tree is 25 years old. After that, the bark is only harvested every nine years to allow it to regenerate completely. ▹ It isn’t until the third harvest, when the tree is around 43 years old, that its bark is of the quality to make a natural cork closure! ▹ Once the bark is harvested, it sits for six months, then it is boiled to even out its moisture content. ▹ The thickest bark pieces are punched into natural cork stoppers. The rest is ground to be used in other cork products. ▹ Once the cork is made, it’s decorated by heat, ink, or laser. And, viola. It’s sent to the winery and put into the bottle! ‌ 💥Added fact - The Cork Oak forest in Portugal is 1 of the 36 biodiverse hotspots in the world.
