SCIENCE SUPPORTED PROTOCOLS TO IMPROVE FOCUS & ATTENTION • - Humans are incredibly visual creatures. We possess something called foveal vision, which is high acuity vision in the center of our visual field. This is distinct from our peripheral (panoramic) vision, which is better at detecting motion, but is fairly low resolution. - More than 40% of our brain is involved in vision in some way or another. Perhaps not surprisingly then, our cognitive focus largely follows where we are focusing our visual attention. And while this might seem obvious to some, what is less obvious is that you can learn to increase your cognitive focus abilities by practices of visual focus/attention. These generally come in two forms. - The first is to practice maintaining visual focus on a fixation point for 1 to 3 minutes (blinking is fine). I recommend doing this just prior to doing cognitive work if you’re feeling distracted. Don’t make the fixation point your phone; duh. - Second, there are data showing that a brief, 8-13 minutes per day (closed eyes) meditation can enhance cognitive focus, but under those conditions you want to direct your “minds eye” to a location just behind your forehead. - It is normal to have your attention drift during either of these two practices, but simply redirect it back to where it needs to be. Both have been shown to improve cognitive focus during bouts of activity that required deep attention. - Low or no vision people can do these with auditory fixation instead. - I’ve done several Huberman Lab podcast episodes about focus and ADHD. You can find the episodes in all formats at hubermanlab.com; simply enter “focus” and/or “ADHD” in the search function; all HLP episodes are timestamped so that you can navigate easily to the topics most of interest to you. - Meanwhile, please put any questions you have in the comments section below this post, and as always, thank you for your interest in science! - @hubermanlab @stanford.med @stanford @nihgov @nimhgov @societyforneuroscience @cellpress - #neuroscience #science #neurosciencia #ciencia #brain #neuroplasticity #attention #focus #visual #fixation #ADHD #protocols
