When an individual is protesting society's refusal to acknowledge his dignity as a human being, his very act of protest confers dignity on him.” -Bayard Rustin Today marks the 60th anniversary of The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a historic civil rights event held on August 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C. It was a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement and is most renowned for featuring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Which was prompted by the spirit filled encouragement of gospel icon Mahalia Jackson. The march aimed to address issues of racial segregation, discrimination, and economic inequality faced by African Americans. Around 250,000 people from various backgrounds participated in the peaceful demonstration, making it one of the largest gatherings in U.S. history at that time. Participants included civil rights activists, religious leaders, labor groups, and ordinary citizens who sought racial equality and economic opportunities. Here at #XULA we are forever grateful for the contributions of those who came before us. We remain committed to carrying out the mission of creating a more just and humane society.
