Exactly a year ago, I had to move out of my first solo apartment after living there for two years & had to paint everything back to white. And although that part wasn’t fun, I did get my full deposit back 😀 Here are some FAQ’s from my personal renting experience in NYC. Of course, it may vary based on your location. Most rentals allow painting walls as long as they are returned back in the original color. Paint shades are often listed on the lease or you can get that info from your management company. I always make sure to also ask if I’m allowed to paint before I decide to rent. Removable renter friendly peel & stick wallpaper do not leave residue (at least the ones I’ve used). But to be sure do a little test in a corner of your wall, leave it on for a couple of days & then it take off to see what happens. Do not use peel & stick wallpaper on damaged walls coz it will cause further damage. Small holes can easily be filled up. Your local hardware store is the best resource to find the right material for this. Do this step before painting the walls. Command hooks/strips are a great option to minimize holes & still hang up art in your apartment. If you change hardware like knobs, showerhead,etc or lighting, save the original ones to replace it when you move out.
