This summer the Restoration team collected CA native annual seeds from the Copper Fire area. The main goal is to collect 10,000 seeds of each annual species to conduct an experiment to see what germinates the most. The annual species for the experiment includes Winecup Clarkia (Clarkia purpurea), Chia (Salvia columbarie), California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Goldenstar (Bloomeria crocea), Butterfly Mariposa Lily (Calochortus venustus), and many more. Plant material is collected as vouchers. Vouchers are basically herbarium specimens, a pressed, dried sample of an individual plant including its flowers, leaves, stems, roots, and/or fruits. Vouchers are collected to confirm the plant species collected since there can be varieties of each species. It is critical to verify each species for the experiment. Every time a collection is made in the wild, our restoration team makes sure to only collect 15-20% of the population. This leaves the rest of the seeds to germinate on their own and/or as a food source for wildlife. The Restoration team has special permits with many organizations such as the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to collect seeds and plant material. We encourage everyone to collect seeds from their own gardens or private land with permission from the owner.
