It seems like I am getting so many questions about how to start. I realize when we are all talking about our freeze dryers, gardens, canning skills and pantry layers it can seem overwhelming but please trust me when I tell you that none of us started out this way. You can swipe to see the picture of how it started for me. I always had extra cans of this and that but I decided to organize my pantry and make a plan to increase the variety of my shelf stable food. It was game on from there once I had a plan. Here are 4 things I believe are the basis for getting started. 1. Set a budget How much can you spend each week/month. I started really small but then as I wanted to add bigger ticket items I found ways to save the money I would need (extra freezer, Freeze dryer etc). 2. Make a list. What will your family eat? Don’t buy items that you won’t eat because you will need to rotate often. Try to mix it up so you have a variety. Aim for a month then go from there. 3. Prepare your storage location. For me it was a rack in a closet in the beginning, that quickly changed but that’s an entirely different post. 4. Shop Sales. This is key to making your prepping budget stretch. Think Winco, Aldi, Costco etc. once you have a good working pantry you will rarely ever pay full price for anything. There is no magic formula or checklist to follow. Only you know what your family needs. I think you will find when you just start it will naturally progress into learning skills and building layers. You can do it. ❤️ To all my long timers out there, how about a tip for those just starting out?
