It's in the way the trees cast their shadows on the ground. It's in the very air, the fragrance of something bittersweet. The wind changes its song ever so slightly, imperceptibly. The expectation becomes almost tangible. Something wondrous is about to happen. Autumn is almost here. Carla was preparing her carriage and the automaton horse which pulled it for a new day of work, checking how well oiled the joints were, making sure this mechanical wonder was clean and shiny. She was so immersed in her musings about the upcoming season that she got startled by a dry leaf, swirling in the wind. It stroked her cheek gently and fell neatly into her open palm. Carla held it carefully and studied it with admiration. The leaf was almost as big as her hand, tear-shaped with ragged edges. It was a deep aubergine shade fading into a dark pumpkin colour closer to the tip. The veins were almost black. 'This one definitely goes into my little collection,' she thought and chuckled, grateful for this gift of fate. The leaf was trembling softly in the wind, as if waving at her in greeting.
