Thank you all for your responses to my stories regarding this mysterious case with the apex locator. So many of you messaged asking, "Tell me, what is the answer?" As you can see in the first slide, a student was working on this upper premolar- once we were several mm past the estimated WL based off the PA, the apex locator was still not reading into the red indicating patency. I felt something was wrong, so the student took a new PA which showed the files were way past the apex. So what was the issue? After eliminating the other possible causes that many of you suggested, I asked the student- "Did you precheck your apex locator?" He did not, so when I connected the apex locator file holder to the lip clip, you can see in the second slide, it remained in the blue zone which indicates the file holder or wires are faulty! After replacing the file holder with a new one, the apex locator worked fine and we got the correct working length immediately! ⁣⁣ The tip for today is: Always check your apex locator cables/clip prior to using it on each patient!⁣⁣ As you can see in this case, you can end wasting alot of time trying to figure out why your apex locator is not working properly. There are so many possible causes as many of you mentioned, so it make sense to eliminate one of the most common causes even before you start treatment! ⁣ The third slide mentions the checklist I go through before each patient to make sure the apex locator is ready to be used on the patient so make sure you take a look at that and use it as reference!
