Gomphrena, also called globe amaranth, is SO FUN! A great cut flower, dried flower, and garden plant. 🥰 There are two main types of gomphrena for cut flower use- “gomphrena globosa” and “gomphrena haageana” (shown here). Gomphrena globosa is by far the most popular one to grow because it comes in such an amazing range of colors! However, it’s very branch-y which makes stems fussier to harvest (they get tangled with each other). The last thing I want to be doing in the heat of a summer evening with mosquitos bothering me is to untangle stems. 😆 Gomphrena haageana produces taller, straight stems that are way easier to harvest. Stems are skinnier, but I’m less bothered by this. ☺️ Here’s how I grow: Sun: Full sun Soil: Not fussy, but good drainage Spacing: 6-9” Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date (Mid May for me, google can tell you yours!). Cover seeds very lightly with 1/8” soil. Harden off plants (gradually acclimate them to the outside) and transplant out after danger of frost.
