Please join me in congratulating @Doctor.Darien on his official new job as the National Medical Correspondent for #ABCNews and #GoodMorningAmerica! In our nine years together, I’ve seen Darien go from: business school graduation, med school graduation, residency at Bellevue, a first-year attending physician during the beginning of the #COVID19 pandemic, and a nationally renowned medical expert with more than two million followers. Darien’s gift to American medicine is that he gives the field something it’s often (and ironically) lacking: a heart. When we prioritize profits over patients, we end up with a fractured healthcare system that fosters broken trust and deep misunderstandings. Throughout his entire medical career, Darien has sought to be a bridge for the people who needed care and accessible information the most. My most powerful memory of Darien is the time he noticed an unhoused woman was being dismissed from the emergency room. She had a large, open wound on her finger—a complication due to her living conditions and ongoing chronic illnesses. She told Darien she felt uncomfortable and was going to make her way to a different hospital, so he wheeled her back into the ER himself and made her his patient. We should all be proud that one of our nation’s top medical experts—and, to my knowledge, the first on-staff Black medical correspondent in American television history—is Dr. Darien Sutton. American media needs a doctor who has firsthand experience treating our nation’s most common illnesses on the frontlines. We can all trust Dr. Sutton. Congratulations to Darien, to ABC, and our wonderful team led by @briarbrad at @wme. And most importantly: congratulations to his mommy, Sheila Sutton! Your sons are a testament to your motherhood, and your inspiring work as an ICU nurse. Darien lives every day to make you proud.
