YOU’D NEVER SPEND MORE THAN 200 EURO FOR A PERFUME? …………… The price development in the fragrance sector, especially in the luxury segment, is significant. For example, Byredo launched eight fragrances in 2009. At that time, you could buy 100 ml of Bal d’Afrique for 110 euros. Approximately three years later, a new 50 ml size was introduced for 90 euros, and the price for 100 ml increased to 140 euros. Today, 50 ml of Bal d’Afrique costs 155 euros, and 100 ml costs 220 euros. In the meantime, Byredo changed ownership twice, and the eight fragrances expanded to a total of 82 references, including flankers and limited editions. I still remember customers who initially resisted the first price increase but eventually followed suit because they loved and wanted “their” perfume. I feel similarly. At first, I get upset and stubborn, but then I want it and usually ignore the price. Byredo is just one example among many, chosen because I remember it specifically. Of course, brand image, product quality, packaging, and marketing come at a price, then and now. Popular brands like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, and Tom Ford have always tended to have higher prices for their merchandise. However, statements from marketing experts like “those who don’t raise prices now are to blame” simply annoy me. In other words, I’ve reached and sometimes exceeded my pain threshold for many things. If what I like is too expensive, I either wait or I skip it altogether because was never a a fan of “buy second best.” How do you see it?
