𝙂𝙞𝙛𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙖 On view at @thearmoryshow with @jessicasilvermangallery Booth #213 𝘎𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢 depicts three women catching up over a meal of uni, sashimi and chawanmushi. The background is my version of 𝘴𝘩𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘰, the color vermillion, originally made from cinnabar and widely used for temples, shrines and torii gates around Japan. The color which is said to have migrated from China to Japan, symbolizes good luck and warding off evil spirits. As a half Japanese half Chinese person that grew up in a mixed, merged and multiracial family, it was important to depict a scene channeling the Japanese diaspora, the shared ethnicity between my sisters and I. Summoning historical imagery; the work weaves a modern day tale, bringing the past into the present over a shared meal.
