SAVE this post for everything you need to know about visiting Katmai National Park 🐻 📍Katmai is located in Southern Alaska on a remote peninsula. 🥾Brooks Falls is the famous spot to see the bears and salmon run. It’s a 1.2 mile walk from the visitor center to the Falls viewing platform 📆 The best time to see the bears is July or September when the salmon runs are at their peak. However, you can always see bears throughout the summer ⏱️ In the busiest times, there may be a wait to see the bears on the viewing platform at Brooks Falls. Then, you may have a time limit for staying there. 🧑‍🏫 All visitors must attend a mandatory orientation to learn how to behave in the park and around the bears. ⛺️ There are only two places to stay on Katmai: Brooks Lodge and Brooks Campground. In order to book either you’ll need to plan ahead! Lodging gets sold out by December and campgrounds get released in January. they only offer 60 spots a night. ✈️ There are a few options to get here: you can fly from Anchorage to King Salmon and take a water taxi, you can take a chartered flight from King Salmon, or fly from Homer ☀️ You can take a day trip to Katmai using a private charter or tour! 💵 Visiting Katmai is relatively expensive! We booked the cheapest travel option, which was $700 a person and campgrounds are $12 a person per night. 🥪 You will need to pack in your food, store it in the food lockers, and eat it in designated picnic areas. The only place to eat in Katmai is Brooks Lodge and it’s pricey 🦟 Katmai is very buggy, so I highly recommend bringing a bug net with you! ✨ Seeing the bears in person is unbeatable and I already want to go back!
