I set my alarm for 4am this morning, got up and ready, grabbed some toast on the way out the door and drove from Edinburgh to Arrochar. After parking my car, it was off to climb The Cobbler. I’ve wanted to do this Corbett for so long, but just never got round to it. I couldn’t have picked a better day. I caught a wee sunrise on the way up and as I gained height, was fortunate enough to see cloud inversions in every direction I looked. The Cobbler is famous for having to ‘thread the needle’ where you have to climb through the hole in the pinnacle and scramble up to reach the summit. As someone who loves scrambling, I’ve been looking forward to doing this for a long time. However, as I approached I couldn’t help notice that the rocks were incredibly wet, probably down to the morning dew and it was pretty windy. Even with my brand new Scarpa trainers on full of grip and about half an hour of deliberating, due to being all on my own at the top, the rocks being really slippy and the wind not calming down, I made the decision not to ‘thread the needle’. I was disappointed, but have always said I won’t take any unnecessary risks. People have unfortunately died here and I would rather stay alive and try again. On the way down, I slipped twice on the wet rocks and this confirmed I made the right decision. I love hiking early in the morning but ironically, it cost me here as I dare say the rocks would’ve been dry later in the morning. However, it was still a phenomenal experience and hopefully this reel shows that.
