A commonly heard visitor question: “Can I get one of those hats?” Timeless. Classic. Dare we say, Iconic. When celebrating #NPSFashionWeek, it is only right to talk about one of our best accessories of all: our Ranger flat hat. When visiting the parks, you may see park staff wearing a variety of National Park Service hats. The hat worn depends on the type of job to be done and the weather. Ball caps, beanies, cowboy hats, helmets, fur hats, and more could be worn. The flat hat is the hat most associated with the National Park Service and has been an official part of our uniform guidelines since 1920. The hat's shape, a dome pinched into four quadrants (known as the Montana Peak), has a military origin. It was inspired by hats worn by the Buffalo Soldiers who protected Yosemite Valley when it was first designated as a park. While you may be able to find hats of similar shape to our flat hats, what makes our hats unique is our hat band. The brown leather band on our hats contain the letters USNPS, United States National Park Service. The band is decorated with sequoia tree cones. This hat holds a remarkable legacy in the National Park Service, and we wear it with pride. Work with us in the National Park Service, and get a hat yourself!
