Lunch by the pool. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve always subscribed to the old adage, ‘what grows together, goes together’ so it stands to reason that plants that thrive in the heat should also be the food that soothes us when we’re melting on a sizzling summer’s day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This simple tartine of golden tomatoes, whipped Breton cream cheese, and basil, served on toasted pain au maïs (corn bread) is perfect for coaxing heat-weary appetites. I garnished it, literally as I walked to the pool plate in hand, with Society Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) flowers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Of all the culinary plants in my garden, perhaps with the exception of lemon verbena, this is the plant I use the most in the kitchen. It’s leaves are a great alternative to chives (used as you would wild garlic), and the lilac coloured flowers I use on everything from salads to soups. Once established, Perennial Garlic forms a hardy, almost indestructible clump that flowers from early summer to late autumn. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The common name, Society Garlic, comes from its charming ability to flavor a dish without the unsociable downside of garlic breath. In fact, it’s not a member of the garlic family at all, but rather, the onion family. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven’t planted one now’s the time!
