ADCC, which has constantly been evolving to offer a better show to fans and a better competition platform to athletes, is making a significant rule change to favor peak-level performance and athlete safety. Competitors will now have the option to make weight the night before the competition instead of the day of. As someone behind the scenes at the last two ADCC events, I see this as a potential game-changer. From what I've observed, even when weigh-ins happened on the day of the competition (even at IBJJF competitions), many athletes still cut weight, albeit to a lesser extent. It is clear that weigh-ins' proximity to competition alone doesn't completely eliminate the issue of dehydration and weight cutting. This rule change is a double-edged sword. It's going to favor some and challenge others. Who stands to benefit? The true high-level professionals who understand the rules and the risks associated with weight cutting. They don't rely on extreme cuts because their skill sets are top-notch, and they can win relying on them. However, those who depend mainly on size difference to win or think 'more is better' when it comes to weight cutting are facing an uphill battle, especially if they push the limits to win the trials, and they will meet a completely different rule set at the ADCC Championship.
