Today I’m a little sad… It usually doesn’t hit me so hard, but I think it’s time to talk about the brother no one has met. The one who wants nothing to do with me or my son’s life. The one who pretends we don’t exist. Saying “my brother and I are estranged” has always felt so weird… knowing he’s somewhere out in the world, but not part of my life by his own choices and narrative. There’s a unique grief that exists for us with family members who are plagued by emotional or mental issues. We don’t long for someone who used to exist, rather we long for connection to a soul that is still roaming the earth. Its okay to feel this. It’s important to normalize conversations about estranged friends and family members… because it’s more common than we think. This post goes out to acknowledge the hole in your heart that may be a loved one that won’t speak to you or has disappeared. Send them love anyway. Give yourself some grace.
