Not my single best image from my trip out East but as far as I can tell probably my most species diverse shot and as I do want to intermingle other shots among my hellbender spam here you go. Right from the get go I was amazed at the freshwater fish diversity in the Appalachians - when I got into the water for the first time and @brycegibsonuwp called me over to a hellbender he was observing, I saw more fish species in a 20 ft swim to the hellbender than i might in a full day of snorkeling a CA stream. Later on in between hellbenders I attempted largely unsuccessfully to photograph some of those fish. This was from one such attempt. It'll be hard to appreciate at phone screen size but in the 2nd image I've labeled the different species. 1) northern hogsucker (Hypentelium nigricans) 2) stonerollers (Campostoma sp.) 3) brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) I think. 4) warpaint shiner (Luxilus coccogenis) 5) an out of focus cyprinid, possibly blacknose dace (Rhinichthys obtusus).
