Shana tova to all those in the #Laurier community celebrating the New Year. Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 15-17) marks the Jewish New Year (together with Yom Kippur, these holidays are also known as the Jewish High Holidays or the Days of Awe). Rosh Hashanah is a two-day festival for reflection and planning for the future. Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of man and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It begins at sundown on the eve of Tishrei 1 and ends after nightfall on Tishrei 2. Feasts traditionally include round challah bread (studded with raisins), apples dipped in honey, and other foods that symbolize our wishes for a sweet year. Yom Kippur (Sept. 24-25; which follows 10 days after) is the holiest day of the year; it is the Day of Atonement. Reminder: some members of the #Laurier community may take time off if they are observing these holidays. Students on the Waterloo campus can connect with Rabbi Moshe Goldman through @jewishwaterloo for details on events, celebrations and supports.
