Tonight we celebrate ROSH HASHANAH, the Jewish New Year of 5784 (ה'תשפ"ד) Literally translates to "head of the year" - Rosh (Head) Ha (of the) Shanah (Year) it is the head that leads, all other days, weeks and months follow. What we think, feel, speak and do, on this special day, will determine what we experience the rest of our days in the year. Rosh Hashanah, also referred to as Yom Hadin (יום הדין : Judgment Day) marks the beginning of the “ten days of repentance“ from New Years to Yom-Kippur - the day of atonement, focusing on self-reflection and forgiveness. Since G-D gave us humans free will, we are responsible for our own actions, and we are fallible to make mistakes. When we repent our own wrong doing, we must seek forgiveness. And when someone else has done us wrong, we have to make a conscious choice to forgive or not... "Choice is the last of the human freedoms" said the late Viktor Frankl (psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor) and Forgiveness is the most compelling testimony to human freedoms. Forgiveness is about the action that is not a reaction. It is the refusal to be defined by circumstance. It represents our ability to change course, reframe the narrative of the past and create an unexpected set of possibilities for the future… "In the face of tragedy, forgiveness is the counter-narrative of hope" [ Rabbi Jonathan Sacks ] One of the most symbolic powers of Rosh Hashanah is the traditional SHOFAR (שופר : ram’s horn) During and after the Synagogue prayers - The Shofar is blown in piercing blasts of alternating long (תקיעה : tekiah) and broken bursts (שברים : shvarim), and symbolizes that every act of forgiveness mends something broken in this fractured world. Listening to the voice of shofar during these days of repentance is considered a #mitzva in jewish faith, and since the #shofar voice speaks without words, the message that is heard depends a great deal on who is doing the listening... Shana Tova, Gmar C'hatima Tova, and a blessed new year to you and your family. Shabbat Shalom and C'hag Sameach!
