“If a wire has too much electric current flowing through it, it will heat up. In this demonstration called “the capacitor discharge”, Daniel Davis and I took that notion to the extreme, pumping a peak current of 49,000 amps (by my calculations) through the wire to melt it and spray it across the room. It shot outwards across the room because of the Lorentz Force, the force that the electrons in the wire feel as they are moving through the wire and also through the magnetic field created by the rest of the steel wire. The reason that the steel fireworks didn’t catch anything on fire in the room is because the temperature of the molten balls of steel are high, but their tiny size means they have very little heat, and heat transfer would be the dominant factor in starting a fire this way. “ Captions, video credit and permission to post granted by @backmacsci Do you like our content?
