Chart House, 372 Little Bourke Street, a Modernist workshop/office building from 1941 by RM & MH King, original elevation from @vic_archives - I last reported in 2018, when the building was going to protected as part of the surrounding #HardwareLane heritage precinct - but the owner objected, it went to appeal, and VCAT decided in 2020 that since the pink and yellow ‘tiles’ (probably actually scored render) had been rendered over in pink and grey in the 80s, that it was too altered to be ‘heritage’, and so now it’s ‘not contributory’. ☹️ And there’s no height limit either, so there was nothing @cityofmelbourne could do to oppose an 18 level hotel. Though I see there’s a newer plan for 12 levels of offices, which is better, but it will still overshadow the otherwise very low scale area. Further grumble - there are so many places far more altered than this that are contributory to precincts ….. and here the shopfronts and the original tenant sign, which gave the building its name, are intact.
