✨ Book Tour: All You Have To Do Is Call (Out 9/19) ✨ ⁉️: Who would you call during a difficult time in your life? And why? My heart always says my mom without thinking for a moment. One of the hardest things of missing her has been being unable to call her as I used to during all times of the day for happy and difficult days. Author @kerrimaherwriter’s debut and timely novel asks us to reflect on this question. Based on the true story of the Jane Collective - an underground organization in Chicago that supports women to have a choice on their own bodies and performs safe, illegal abortions, the novel explores the relationship between Patty and Veronica, one of the women involved in the Jane Collective. As the question of reproductive rights comes to head in our everyday lives, the novel set in the 1970s takes us on a journey back in time to witness how unimaginable times cause us to rethink our own values and cultural beliefs. While Patty and Veronica are close, they share different set of beliefs often having awkward moments together and Patty is uneasy with Veronica’s activism when she participates as a Freedom Rider. However, things change when her runaway younger sister, Eliza returns unexpectedly. Patty is then forced to confront her values and come to terms with what it means to love and support a sister. Along with them, Margaret, a young tenure-track professor secretly volunteers for the collective while being involved with a colleague and dealing with his ex-wife. As personal becomes increasingly political when popular culture told women that their rights had increased drastically, the women are faced with making unimaginable choices in their lives. Maher’s novel is a must read not only in the way she deftly explores a polarizing issue especially after the overturning of Roe vs Wade, but also her writing style is engaging and immersive. I couldn’t keep it down - undoubtedly a 5 ✨ from me.
