The hellbender image spammage continues - eventually, I'll get more photos of different subjects to share but for now, I'm having fun sharing new images rather than diving into the hard drives for older content. A hellbender shedding its outer layer of skin, the hellbender got the process started and the river current handled the rest; peeling the skin off the bender and carrying it downstream wafting through the current like some sort of salamander ghost. It all happened quickly with the bender emerging from under a rock and actively writhing around to slough off its skin - I opted for a closer image initially and then to my surprise the entire mass of mucus and skin unfurled from a shapeless glob by the bender's tail into a billowy gauzy translucent shed which still had identifiable body parts visible (see the 2nd image for a close up of the toes!). At that point it didn't stick to the salamander at all and was immediately whipped downstream by the current. It all happened in about a second, and I had to move back and reframe the image, so I wasn't able to get the exact composition I wanted and cut a portion of the skin off in the image.
