When we first moved into our old house, we thought that the lush, trailing vine covering and towering over our fence was Jasmine. A few months after settling in, I noticed lime green fruits beginning to grow. Eventually, they would turn dark purple, and shrivel up before dropping to the brick below. ​​​​​​​​⁣​​​​​​​​ I found out there was, in fact, some Jasmine in the mix, but somehow a Creeping Fig had mostly taken over. In a recent conversation I had, someone brought up a passage from Sylvia Path’s book “The Bell Jar,” and I was reminded of how she speaks of sitting at the base of a fig tree, watching the rotting figs drop one by one. . . .imagining each fig as a life path or decision she has yet to make. Her grief is evident as she sits paralyzed, unable to choose a fig for fear of missing out on all the others. And yet, by choosing none she misses out completely.​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​ I can’t help but think of the concept of decision fatigue and how sometimes when we have to make so many decisions in our daily life we can become paralyzed and overwhelmed with the thought of having to make more decisions.
