The language we use when describing an animal’s behaviour is important. When we use blanket statements like “stubborn” or “aggressive” we glaze over what the actual behaviour is and shrug it off as a personality trait. By saying the entire animal is “stubborn” we’re telling ourselves that this is who they are and that cannot change all the while ignoring the root cause of the behaviour setting ourselves up to fail every time we try to change it, since we’re missing the bigger pieces of the puzzle. If instead we use terms to accurately describe how an animal is behaving, and the feelings that triggered the behaviour to occur, it allows us to properly explain the situation. Not only does this give us the tools to help them and alter the behaviour but it also makes it easier to be patient with them. If I say “newt is being aggressive” it’s easy to get upset and agitated with that. He’s being mean and I don’t like it! It makes it very likely that someone may act impulsively instead of productively. If I change it to “newt is lunging at me because he is stressed and scared” it’s easy to have some patience and empathy. Allowing me to have a clearer headspace required to make good training decisions instead of acting on impulse out of anger or frustration.
