5 COMMON MISTAKES WHEN DRAWING HAIR ⠀ 1. Not using the same colours in the hair and skin tones. ⠀ Hair colours must be mixed from the same palette which was used to draw or paint the flesh tones, otherwise it will not look like it belongs to the same person. ⠀ The only exceptions are grey and dyed hair. ⠀ 2. Making the outer edge too hard and solid. ⠀ If you do not want the hair to look like a helmet, keep the edges soft like smoke! And remember to leave air gaps between individual locks and flyaway strands. ⠀ 3. Forgetting about the anatomy of the head. ⠀ Beginners often forget that hair grows on the head and must follow its anatomical planes. It should have the same shifts from highlight to halftone to shadow as the head itself. ⠀ 4. Not creating enough volume. ⠀ It happens when artists do not observe the spatial relationships between sections of the hair: how some protrude forward and others recede, how they twist, turn, create air gaps, overlap each other and cast shadows on adjacent areas. ⠀ 5. Drawing too many individual hairs. ⠀ Surprisingly, this has a reverse effect: the more details you put the less realistic it will look! ⠀ The solution: block in hair as a large mass, simplify and soften in the shadows as much as you can, and then add only some details in the light areas to show the hair texture and movement.
