At the end of last year my alopecia started to get really aggressive. I’ve dealt with it since I was a teenager but I’ve been really lucky with my bald patch placement (lol). But the fallout this time around was much more than ever before, to a point where I was afraid of dancing “full out” because I was ashamed of all the skin that would be showing through my hair. It came to a point where I felt like that shame was permeating my choreography - the last thing I wanted to do was subconsciously pass that shame on in the movement I was creating with people (IE not utilising dynamic direction changes, or keeping the head stationary, or not making physical contact between your hands and your head, etc). I also wasn’t able to physically show how I wanted movement to be executed because I didn’t want to do it “full out” and flash a bald patch. After a LONG time mulling about what to do (Get a wig? Get hair integration? Shave it off? Leave it as it is?) I finally gathered the courage to go to the salon and shave it all off. One of my dearest friends @whatconnorsaw came with me to the salon for support. As I was speaking to Akemi (my amazing hairdresser) she suggested maybe just shaving one side as I still had some hair on the left side of my head! We went for it and I felt like a rockstar. I left the salon feeling like myself again - but this time more badass 🤣 All of this to say that I asked another dear friend @ghaney22 to get some pics of me and my new ‘do - couldn’t have picked a better person to capture me on film. It was the perfect balance of letting someone else take the direction reigns for a few hours, but still having an organic flow to the shoot. I love my new haircut and I love dancing around with it! Also to say, take care of your body and treat it kindly. Exploitation of it will manifest in one way or another - but even so, we can still celebrate our flaws as they are what make us all special ❤️ #alopecia #hairloss
