My name is Cadeem. I was born in Jamaica, and my family and I moved to Canada a few years later. I grew up mainly in the Greater Toronto Area, with some years spent in England (and visits back to Jamaica). I met Anika online in 2020, just when things started to open up again after COVID. She had recently moved from Manitoba, where she was born and raised. We met on a sidewalk patio for coffee, and things picked up from there. We both had similar values regarding family and equity and were trying to build on our careers. I accidentally met Anika's mom on the third date. We were supposed to stop by the house to drop off the dog, but her mom was there, too. I remember asking, "Does she know I'm black?" I'd lived in Brampton, which has a sizeable Indian population. The clutched purses and stares I got from many people there made me think I'd never date an Indian woman. Not because I didn't want to, but because of the intolerance from the other side. However, her mom, stepdad and Nani made me feel at home. Since then, I've met her dad, all of her siblings and more of her extended family. She's also clicked with my side; my mom is happy to have another daughter. We live together and got married in a Jamaican-Indian fusion wedding in August. We were fortunate to have families that put our love first and embraced us, and it's a blessing that I hope more people will be able to have. #BlindianProject ✍️: @cadeemlalor
