I started getting intrusive thoughts when I was 11, then later realized I had OCD. Intrusive thoughts are thoughts that make us uncomfortable or are distressing. To my surprise, almost everyone experiences them. The difference with people with OCD is that we may obsess over the thoughts, look for hidden meaning, or perform compulsions to help us feel better. Some compulsions are also invisible, like rumination. Once I realized that we have thousands and thousands of thoughts a day, it made sense to me that not all of them would make sense or necessarily require further inquiry. This helped me shift a core belief from “all my thoughts have meaning” to “I get to choose which thoughts matter.” This takes a lot of the pressure off, which has skyrocketed my mental health. And help me feel significantly more inner peace. Sending love to anyone struggling with intrusive thoughts and/or OCD tonight. Your compulsions are not invisible to me. Love, @jasonbuchel #selftrust #ocd #fridaywisdom
