Our giraffes have a BIG week this week! We’ll be doing annual comprehensive exams on all 4 of them. We wanted to set them up for success so we’ve been very busy training all summer to prepare them for blood draws, radiographs, and many other aspects that will allow us to monitor their health! For some of them it involved learning new behaviors such as stepping on various objects, getting used to touching on their necks and anything else we could desensitize them to to make these exams as seamless as possible. Using cooperative care training to teach them to participate in these exams, we can monitor their health in a positive and non stressful manner!
