Once upon a time, in a garden not so far away, our Garden Club Guide, Farmer Greg, stumbled upon a gateway to farming that was as unexpected as a cow in a cornfield. Can you guess what it was? Greg’s journey began in search of a profession that wasn’t just meaningful but also Earth-friendly. He started working for a Rainwater Catchment company, setting up those nifty rainwater barrels in people’s yards. But little did he know, this raindrop adventure would sprout into a flourishing farming career almost a decade later! During his time installing barrels and then farming himself, Greg noticed that plants responded better to rain water than any other form of water. It was like the plants and leaves were dancing, reaching for the sky with new growth after a good rain. Greg’s ears perked up… He later found out that there are special, beneficial bacteria only found in rainwater called phyllosphere microbes which become part of a plant’s aboveground microbial community. Phyllosphere microbes are beneficial in protecting plants from disease and other stressors, improving their overall plant health. Additionally, rainwater is more nutritious for plants than city water because it often contains less chemicals such as chlorine.
