Happy Chuseok! It’s Korean Thanksgiving and this year I wanted to be particularly thankful for the fact that I can openly and lovingly embrace my Korean side as much as I want. Once when I was around 8, I had a classmate roll their eyes at me and ask me why I talked about Korea all the time. At the time I felt so hurt and confused. Was I supposed to feel embarrassed about it or pretend that I wasn’t Korean? Was I being TOO Korean for the non-diverse community I grew up in? Was it inappropriate to talk about Korea if I had recently visited? What a different world it is now, with K-pop being viral, K-beauty being desired, and Korea itself being a top tourist destination. I know my kids will have challenges of their own finding their own place within both Korean and American cultures but for now I’m so grateful that they can just learn more and fully embrace where they are at right now. I’m thankful for my husband @ben.ja.mins who practices Korean Duo-lingo daily and cooks our family Korean food. I’m thankful for my parents who sacrificed everything to raise me with 0 shame of my Korean side. And I’m thankful for my kids who are also celebrating Chuseok today at school 📚🥰 All this to say, if you ever feel in between cultures here is your permission to embrace wherever you are in your journey.
