I listened to Your Table is Ready by Michael Cecchi-Azzolina for book club (via @librofm obvi). It was an entertaining listen - dude is a character. I like restaurant industry entertainment (loved Sweetbitter and enjoyed Writers & Lovers, and obsessed with The Bear) so I was interested in a nonfiction inside scoop. This book had its funny moments but was ultimately forgettable. Cecchi-Azzolina has worked at some top tier restaurants and the insights into how they are run were cool to learn about, but the celeb tea was not piping hot. It was lukewarm at best. The writing was a bit all over the place - it jumped around, and sometimes I wondered what the point of a section was. Also it is a bit demoralizing to think about how the ultra rich can just become regulars and eat at these types of places with no issue but for a normal person, this type of service is essentially unattainable. It just isn’t really possible for a regular lil ol person like me to get a reservation at certain restaurants, even if I wanted to splurge for a fancy meal. They are exclusively for celebs and the ultrawealthy, which, ick. I say this after having fought for and somehow gotten a reservation at Carbone once, albeit at a not ideal time slot - the actual dinner times (like 6-9) are reserved for important people and not for us plebeians.
