What a smash hit of a novel. Yellowface might not be Rebecca Kuang's best work (that honour belongs to Babel IMO), but it's an idea well-imagined and a satire well-executed, even though it goes completely off the rails towards the end. Writing from the PoV of an unsuccessful white author, she does a steller job of asking the questions that are vexing the publishing industry (or the entertainment industry, even) today. Who is allowed to tell which stories? Can a white woman write about Chinese soldiers? Does representation mean less if it comes from the "wrong" source? It pulls you into Kuang's complicated relationship (addiction?) with publishing, an industry she can never shake off, a condition she must live with, manage, whose status quo she mocks in her book, even though it is what brought this very same book to life. Too Meta. Much Meta. Taarak Meta ka Ooltah Chashma. I read this book breathlessly over three nights. Couldn't put it down. I won't tell you what the book is about, surely you can Google that, but I will tell you this - Yellowface is a must-read, if for nothing else then for the conversations it will spark. Don't be left out! #BookReview #Yellowface #AtLeastReadCaptionIfNotBook #RFKuang #RebeccaKuang
