As a second-generation Mexican immigrant in Boyle Heights, California, Laura Martinez, PhD, accompanied her parents to medical appointments to bridge language barriers. Despite their efforts to learn English, her parents struggled to communicate with English-speaking doctors. She became an advocate for their health and later researched language concordance and the Latino physician workforce at UCLA's Latino Policy and Politics Institute. There are more than 40 million Spanish speakers in the country. Research shows that patients without language-concordant health care providers are more likely to experience miscommunication and adverse events. Advocates and researchers say training more bilingual physicians could improve equitable care in Latino communities.
