I wrote this piece for @essence about the realities of living with sickle cell disease (SCD) and surviving a bone marrow transplant When I first met Anne, I knew instantly that I wanted to write about her. An introduction first made on the clubhouse app, followed by sporadic instagram DM’s and an in-person meeting at a DC tea shop this time last year manifested in this piece and a lifelong friendship. Our DC meet up happened to be weeks before Anne went through the daunting process of receiving a bone marrow transplant - the only known cure for SCD. September is #sicklecelldiseaseawareness month. As a Nigerian-American, I have grown up knowing friends and peers impacted by this condition. As an Emergency Medicine Resident, I have taken care of multiple patients in debilitating pain crises - I have also unfortunately witnessed stigmatization and inadequate pain control first hand. I desired to write this piece to highlight the impact of sickle cell disease on self esteem, relationships, and everything in between. Thank you to Anne for vulnerably sharing your story with the masses, continuously advocating for those with SCD, and taking your experience with chronic illness in stride despite what life has thrown at you.
