#Storyboards from a cut scene in #Nimona of Ballister and Ambrosius meeting for the first time 🖤💛 (1/2) In a previous version of the movie, we followed Ballister’s journey from his humble beginnings into knighthood. Right before this scene, Ballister was running away from some guards when he comes across this blonde haired stranger who offers a helping hand. What was special about this scene was that here these two characters could meet as equals - no societal hierarchies or rules at play. Ballister, a scrappy but resourceful kid from the streets, and Ambrosius, a kid of noble descent, sit down to eat popcorn and watch the knighting ceremony together. When I first boarded this scene, there weren’t designs for the kid versions of the characters. I vaguely based my designs off ND Stevenson’s adorable original drawings of young Ballister and Goldenloin. This was also before G was redesigned, which explains the long blonde hair. Working without designs can often be the case in storyboarding, especially when characters are first introduced in the script. The design for the stadium rafters hadn’t also been explored either, but it was cool to get to work on it since I got to board the moment in the rafters when they’re grown up as well - it was implied this became a little hang out spot for them. Though it was cool to see Ballister’s whole journey, I really appreciate how much more succinct the first act of the movie was in the final version. This scene also holds a special place in my heart because it was my very first assignment after being sent to work from home in 2020. Something about pitching through Zoom made me extremely nervous. I was feeling the vacancy of my bedroom and the lack of direct feedback that comes from being in a story room full of people.
