Today I’m playing a bassoon section excerpt from Symphonie Fantastique (1830), a programmatic symphony by Berlioz. I’m excited to be performing this piece with the Boston Symphony on Sunday 8/6 at 2:30pm at Tanglewood!

The story of Symphonie Fantastique is not exactly a fairy tale, but it is important to the study of fairy tale music for two reasons: first, the emphasis on fantasy and the fantastical in this piece was influential for the interest in fairy tales as a subject for music, and second, Symphonie Fantastique is the quintessential example of program music that would become an important genre for fairy tale music as well.

This energetic excerpt comes from the Witches’ Sabbath, the final movement of the piece. At this point in the story, the protagonist has dreamed of his own death and is now at his funeral. This is not a somber affair; instead, all sorts of monsters and witches have come to celebrate his death in a grotesque dance.
