🧚🏼 #fairytalefridays 🧚🏼 Today I’m playing a bassoon solo from Dum Dee Tweedle (1992), an opera by David Del Tredici. 🦪 American composer David Del Tredici has written about a dozen works inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Although the Alice stories are better categorized as literary fantasy than fairy tale, they share enough characteristics with fairy tales to be relevant to a study of fairy tale music, especially because of the number of pieces inspired by Alice. In fact, there have been so many adaptations, musical and otherwise, of Carroll’s books that they seem timeless, and they are old enough to have entertained and been passed down through generations, much like folklore. 🦪 This opera is a nonsensical setting of a chapter from Through the Looking Glass in which Alice encounters Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who tell her the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter. In the tale, the walrus and the carpenter trick a bunch of little oysters to go on a walk with them so that they can eat them for dinner.
