Watercolour can be both a tender and strong medium, the colours gentle and yet vibrant, giving their own properties as they caress the paper in time with the rhythm of water as it spreads countless particles of pigment between and across the cotton paper strands. I chose two fierce colours, Alizarin Crimson and Prussian Blue, and the soft moderating effect of the earth colour, Yellow Ochre, to express a strong protective bond alongside the gentle affection so visible between a mother elephant and her new baby. The colours blend to create their own harmonising effect. The resilient creatures have found a haven along the maze of dry riverbeds in the Namibian desert (the Hoanib, Hoarusib and Ugab Rivers), trees provide shade while the elephants use their tactile trunks to dig deep for water beneath the warm equally resilient sands.  This painting and four other wildlife paintings are on show at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea, opening today, Saturday 19th August from 12 - 5pm, you are welcome to come along.
