The white sands of Long Beach, a short walk from my Cape Town studio, inspired a series of oil paintings in turquoise blue and white, currently on show at Ham Yard Village with PlusArte. I used the oil paint transparently, like watercolour, to paint the sky and sea, and even, as in watercolour, left some of the white of the primed canvas for the whites but, unlike in watercolour, I found I needed white paint to bring them up to the level of whiteness I actually wanted. The differences between the transparent and opaque media fascinate me, same pigments, different results. I love the physical materials of painting, not only the substance of the paint, the binder and the thinner, but the surfaces of canvas and paper, wood and board, and the composition of the brushes, they all absorb my interest and make me feel privileged to be part of such a long established and traditional craft.
