“I must say I had a tough time, but my spirits have not been dampened. You can tell my friends all over the world that this old girl is still her old self. I am looking forward to the day when my children will share in the wealth of our lovely South Africa. When I die, I’ll die a happy person because I have seen the rays of our new South Africa rising” – Lillian Ngoyi. Mama Masediba Lilian Ngoyi was one of the leading figures behind the movement for women's rights, as she and many others led the women's anti-pass march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on the 9th of August, 1956. This was considered to be one of the largest demonstrations to have ever taken place in South African history. Mama Lilian Ngoyi was said to be the one who knocked on Prime Minister Strijdom's door to hand over these petitions. This image is one of a series of inspirational portraits of strong women from Africa and African descent, as illustrated by honours students from the University of Johannesburg Graphic Design. We will post a portrait every second weekday for the rest of August, Women's Month. #WomensMonth #UJAllTheWay 📸: @graphicdesignuj & @fleurflor_
