Salman Toor’s “Fag Puddle with Candle, Shoe, and Flag” (2022), is now on view at the Metropolitan Museum in Gallery 915. Recently acquired by @MetMuseum, the painting is included in the rehanging of The Blanche and A.L. Levine Court for Modern and Contemporary Art.⁠ •⁠ In paintings that Toor terms ‘Fag Puddles,’ objects and limbs pile and tumble, resulting in compositions that spill over in allusion and meaning—“it’s important to me for Fag Puddles to be leaky” says the artist. ⁠ ⁠ Here, a feather boa, a retro striped necktie, a string of pearls, and an unbuckled belt snake up a pile of bodies and things capped by a tombstone, a flag, and a shoe. There, the light from the titular candle—that leitmotif of a traditional still life painting—competes with the illumination of a suspended lightbulb and the flashlight from a mounted smartphone, seemingly recording what appears to be a scene of intimacy and wonder.
