I’m often asked how we can heal from childhood trauma when we can’t even remember our childhoods. While it’s impossible to fully address this in a post, my hope is that these words will offer a new perspective. We don’t have to remember all the details of the trauma in order to heal. Keeping with this metaphor, it’s not even necessary to remember if there was a rock at all. If there are ripples we can feel, that is enough to work with. Slowing down enough to be curious about how we adapted (which is often what’s causing distress in adulthood), and how these adaptations are still present with us now can help us reconnect with ourselves. This is one of the ways healing happens. Reconnecting with ourselves, and how that unfolds looks different for everyone. Laurence Heller, Aline La Pierre, Judith Herman, Janina Fisher, Gabor Maté…many have written about this in their work, so there’s tons of literature to explore on this topic. It’s also important to mention that while knowledge is helpful for healing, knowledge isn’t the same as healing, which is why getting support is ideal whenever possible.
