🌴 We bought land to protect the Amazon rainforest! 🐍 We have some very exciting news to share with you all! We recently purchased over 140 hectares of rainforest in the Ecuadorian Amazon, just on the border of the spectacular Yasuni National Park. You might have heard of Yasuni as it is regarded as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The reason for Yasuni’s extraordinary biodiversity, even by Amazonian standards, is a result of its old age. The rainforest in the region survived the last ice age and it became a refuge for plants and animals from which the biodiversity spread across the rest of the Amazon once the glaciers retreated. This is a big milestone for all of us at Mossy Earth as this is the first land we have purchased for nature conservation and we plan to start a forest conservation project led entirely by our team. To make this happen, we will work together with our new colleague Fredy, a member of the local indigenous community who knows the rainforest like the back of his hand. We first spoke with Fredy about the idea of doing something for the rainforest and the people of this region just a few months ago, so we still find this a bit hard to believe. Our land purchase happened during a landmark moment for the Yasuni. We signed the contract just days before the historic referendum, in which Ecuadorians overwhelmingly supported a ban on future oil extraction in the National Park. We hope this vote marks a new era for the Ecuadorian Amazon, in which economic activities will start shifting towards sustainable, nature-friendly economies. Our aim is to contribute to this new vision for the Amazon. Right now, this is all still at a very early stage but we wanted to share this special moment with you.
