Help us welcome new fashion brand @fefetidesigns to the Made in NYC community! Selorm Fefeti, the co-founder of Fefeti, blends his Ghanaian heritage with the city’s vibrancy in each piece of clothing he designs, creating unique pieces that stand out—even in NYC. Launched in April of 2023, Fefeti crafts small-batch outerwear and hats. Each piece is a work of art, highlighting the rich kente fabric sourced from weavers in Ghana's Bolgatanga and Bonwire regions. “The art and practice of traditional kente in my hometown has rapidly disappeared over the last few decades,” says Selorm. “To counteract this, we have direct partnerships with weavers through community and personal relationships. Our sourcing not only provides direct financial support to weavers, but allows us to know exactly what our fabrics are made of: cotton, rayon and silk yarns with a mixture of indigo and synthetic dyes. They are hand woven using traditional looms. The fabrics are sent to Selorm from Ghana by his father, Simon Fefeti, and upon arrival in NYC, they’re delivered to J Suan Pattern Inc. in the Garment District for pattern creation. Production is then entrusted to @3Crowns_apparel_services, a black-owned manufacturer in Bed-Stuy. Selorm's motivation for founding Fefeti extends beyond fashion. His aspiration was to rejuvenate the intricate craft of kente weaving and share his cultural heritage by creating versatile kente pieces suitable for any occasion, all the while upholding its inherent significance. Fefeti crafts statement pieces that honor the fabric's value and sentiment, while infusing a modern twist that complements the cosmopolitan style of New Yorkers. "Fefeti" translates to "the importance of joy" in the Ewe language. True to its name, the brand celebrates joy in one’s heritage, crafting a intercontinental tale of father-son partnership. Selorm shares, “We are about breathing life into a dying craft, and envisioning a new approach to kente that sparks a cultural moment in—and far beyond—Ghana.” Upcoming is a fall/winter collection, so follow @fefetidesigns to stay in the know. #NewMemberMonday #MadeinNYC
